Are you compassionate? Do you enjoy helping other people? Do the concepts of inclusivity and accessibility of education matter to you?
Whether you are someone changing careers or already a certified teacher, you can complete a Special Education degree. The Special Education programs at the University of South Carolina are designed for anyone who wishes to get involved with helping students with disabilities.
If you are not already a certified teacher, you will be interested in the B.A. or M.A.T. in Special Education. Current teachers looking to add special education certification can complete the M.Ed. in Special Education. In the BA in Special Education, you will work toward your certification in multi-categorial special education. In the M.A.T. and M.Ed. programs you will select a concentration in multi-categorical special education or severe and multiple special education.
Being a Special Education classroom teacher is a rewarding career – you will have a specialized set of skills in an in-demand industry and make differences in the lives of people who might otherwise not have the same opportunities that many of us do.
You will also have career options beyond the walls of a classroom. Other opportunities to have a positive impact on the lives of people with special needs abound, including physical and occupational therapy, assistive technology, counseling, special education leadership, and higher education research and teaching.
Of course, being a Special Education classroom teacher has its own rewards- the material reward having a specialized set of skills in an in-demand industry, as well as the emotional reward of making differences in the lives of people who might otherwise not have the same opportunities that many of us do.
